Notre Dame Stadium Rings
Location
Notre Dame Football Stadium
South Bend, Indiana
Role
Sculptor, Fabricator, Painter
Project type
Large Scale Sculpture for a NCAA School
This project was done for an artist that was commissioned by Notre Dame College to celebrate their schools history of football. We took several championship rings of well known players and sculpted them in large scale to be displayed around the stadium entrance.
All of the rings were hand sculpted out of 6 lb. rigid foam and all measurements were taken off of class rings provided by Notre Dame. The total outside dimensions were not to exceed 26” in width and 19” in height. The rings were fully 3D and were to sit at angle.
After carving all of the rings were sprayed with catalyzed primer, sprayed with Chroma gold paint, the ring colors were added and the whole ring was clear coated. The rings were then sprayed with a black enamel in the recesses to simulate the real rings.
I was in charge of fabricating Lou Holtz's ring as well as general finishing and painting on some of the more "generic" rings.
The rings were mounted on steel sheeting that was sprayed with enamel paint. Vinyl lettering was applied that listed the stats for the various years the rings represented.
