Woven Shade Sculpture
Location
Anthropologie Deer Park, IL
Project type
Woven Light Shade Sculpture
This oversized rattan shade sculpture was made to highlight home product for Anthropologie. The main section of the shade was over 6' in diameter and 3' high.
Multiple arcs and circles were cut out with a router for the base structure. Round and half round reed (commonly used in basket making) were soaked, bent and dried in shape to use for the over all structure and shape.
The shade consisted of three parts: the main full circle shade, a 3/4 arc and a 1/2 arc. Both of the outer arcs featured hand weaving with flat reed to make them both structurally sound and visually pleasing.
All three pieces were suspended from the ceiling. Unlike most stores, we do not have a ceiling structure. I had to create my own structure with wooden beams. I made quick cardboard templates that I could lay on the floor so I could tel where to place my hanging points from the ceiling (which is over 20 feet in the air).
The shade also served as a working light fixture.
